(Painted Jezebel) Movie Comedy for Grownups Before the curtain rises Previously in this movie-review series, we saw Egeliler suffer a very nasty end -- in the slash-and-burn action drama, The Unfortunate Ones. Time now for lighter fare... How about starting with some movie trivia, before exploring the plot (with pics) of an enjoyable Zerrin Egeliler 'erotik' film-comedy called Painted Jezebel... Will the real Şıllık movie version please stand up! Further below, we'll be talking about the Şıllık (Painted Jezebel) movie version directed by Ülkü Erakalın in 1979 -- starring Zerrin Egeliler, Hadi Çaman, Bülent Kayabaş, and Mürvet Sim (Mürüvvet Sim). But there's another movie version also made in 1979 with nearly the same title, Paylaşılamayan Şıllık (The Painted Jezebel Who Could Not Be Shared) -- a title that often gets shortened to Şıllık, even on movie posters.
As if that weren't confusing enough, that other movie (Paylaşılamayan Şıllık) is based on essentially the same movie plot-premise as Şıllık. And it was also directed by Ülkü Erakalın -- and it also starred Zerrin Egeliler and Mürvet Sim (Mürüvvet Sim)! (The leading male actors are different...in Paylaşılamayan Şıllık the actors are Kazım Kartal and Tarık Şimşek...in Şıllık the actors are Hadi Çaman and Bülent Kayabaş.) We can only speculate about why Director Ülkü Erakalın decided to make two such similar movies using an identical core-group of actresses in 1979. But consider this... 1979 was a year in which the number of erotik film releases (193) topped the previous year's number (126) by a whopping 53% -- although 103 of the 1979 film-crop were made with inferior 16mm film materials and equipment. In any case, such a dramatic increase in film production suggests that erotik film makers (actors, actresses, writers, producers, directors) may have gotten themselves into a frenzy of film-making -- just to get movie-product onto the street before the next guy. Given such a 'movies race' scenario, Erakalın may have released both Şıllık (with Egeliler as a brunette) and Paylaşılamayan Şıllık (with Egeliler in blonde wig) in the same year...due to what he deemed to be 'creative necessity', just to keep up with his competitors -- who were also pumping out movies like peas in a pod. After all... 1979 was the year in which Director Naki Yurter (of 'Oyle Bir Kadin Ki' notoriety) set the record (which has never been broken) for 'Most Movies completed in a single year by any Turkish Movie Director' -- when he completed 28 (erotik) movies. By comparison, Erakalın could only manage completion of a paltry 19 movies in 1979 -- all of them 'erotik' genre films. Note: Erakalın (who also has 23 conventional films to his directorial credit), still holds the record for 'Most Erotik Movies in a career by a Turkish Movie Director', with 157 completed films. The following list (which is based on statistics provided by Erotik Film historian Cihan Demirci149) shows the Top 11 Erotik Movie Directors of all time. But it could easily be mistaken for the list of the Top 11 Conventional Movie Directors -- because all of these erotik directors 'crossed over' to become successful conventional movie directors as well... The Top 11 Erotik Movie Directors (Atıf Yılmaz is at far right in the movie-set snapshot.) The Movie Plot of Şıllık (Painted Jezebel) Şıllık (whose actors also include Kamer Sadık [Kamer Baba], Ali Demir, and Yüksel Gözen) is based on a simple premise...that it's perfectly all right for a wife to remarry a second husband after the death of her first husband. But... what if the reports of her first husband's demise 'have been greatly exaggerated'...? Oh my...
